HP Recalls 1040 and 1050 Fax Machines Due to Fire Hazard

Last Update: August 9th, 2021

Recently announced by HP as well as the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, HP has issued a voluntary recall and rebate for a series of fax machines distributed in Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. due to fire and burn hazards.Hp 1040 1050

Machines affected are: HP Fax 1040, 1050, 1010, and 1010xi.

The recall on the 1040 and 1050 were announced January 31, 2012, while the 1010 and 1010xi were announced June 26, 2008. Total machines affected by the recall are about 1.2 million.

In a twist of irony, according to HP’s customer letter from the previous recall of the 1010 and 1010xi, owners with a recalled machine were given the option of a rebate on the purchase of the HP 1040 and 1050, which are under the current recall for a similar problem (product failure involving power supplies)

According to HP, it is their belief that “some types of failures of these products may pose a potential safety hazard to customers. In those instances the power supply can overheat, posing a fire and a burn hazard. HP customers who own an HP Fax 1040, HP Fax 1050, HP Fax 1010 or HP Fax 1010xi should disconnect the fax machine from the electrical power source and complete the steps below to participate in the rebate program. We are taking this action as part of our continued commitment to safety and the highest quality service to all of our customers.”‘

According to The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s press release “HP Recalls Fax Machines Due to Fire and Burn Hazards“, “there have been seven reports of fax machines overheating and catching fire, resulting in property damage, including one instance of significant property damage and one instance of a minor burn injury to a customer’s finger. Six incidents were reported in the U.S. and one in Canada.”

It is also important to be aware that it is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission is still interested in receiving incident or injury reports related to these products, or involve a different hazard from these products.
